1905 The year was recorded as one of the coldest winters ever with 44 days below freezing and 44.7 inches of snow.

1916 With World War I raging in Europe, Wilmingtonians became scared after a mysterious "aeroplane" was spotted flying over Du Pont's gunpowder plants.

1942 The St. Georges span over the C and D Canal opened for traffic after having been rammed three years before. Its use meant ships didn't have to travel out into the ocean where the German U-boats patrolled.

1979 Declared missing in action almost seven years before, Marine Captain Larry Fletcher Potts of Smyrna was finally declared deceased and became one of the last casualties of Vietnam. His body was never recovered.

Presenter: Orlando Camp

On Saturday, February 1, 2014, 10:30 a.m., the Delaware Public Archives will present this special program to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education case. Following the Supreme Court's landmark decision in the Brown vs. Board of Education in May 1954, Milford High School attempted to integrate the following fall with the admittance of eleven African-American students. Within a short time, the nation's media focused on this Delaware town as it suffered through school boycotts, and the arrival of a white racist organizer named Bryant Bowles. This program will be presented by Orlando Camp, one of the "Milford Eleven" who tried to integrate the school.

Governor Signs Legislation to Raise Minimum Wage
news.delaware.gov

Jack Markell

Even as we have made progress in creating more jobs and getting our state's economy on track, we have much more to do to give opportunity to those earning minimum wage. I am proud to sign this bill and wanted to do so on the same day it passed to reflect the commitment that I and many members of the General Assembly share: we cannot wait any longer to get this done. Raising the minimum wage represents one of the fastest ways we can act to give a boost to many struggling working families.

During the American War for Independence in August and September, 1777, the British invaded Delaware as part of an end-run campaign to defeat George Washington and the Americans and capture the capital at Philadelphia. For a few short weeks the hills and streams in and around Newark and Iron Hill and at Cooch's Bridge along the Christina River were the focus of world history as the British marched through the Diamond State between the Chesapeake Bay and Brandywine Creek. This is the story of the British invasion of Delaware, one of the lesser known but critical watershed moments in American history.
