Supporting Kidds is the Center for Grieving Children and their Families

A subsidiary of Children & Families First

Kidds offers counseling and consultation services, education and training, a resource library for families, and support groups

Guiding Pathways:

  • Consultation: one-time meeting for families facing loss, focus on emergent concerns and how to respond
  • Assessment: for children or teens coping with the death or illness of a loved one, focused on how they are adapting and recommendations for positive adjustment 
  • Psychotherapy: individual counseling for children up to age 18, and family counseling 
  • to support the readjustment and the bereavement process after a death or during a terminal illness
  • offered in New Castle County

Healing Pathways:

  • bereavement support group for children, teens and adults
  • six-weeks, one evening each week, 
  • children are grouped with same-age peers, to learn information and to process feelings and ideas related to the loss 
  • children's groups use art, play, movement and activities to promote healthy adjustment 
  • adults are provided with emotional support and education about supporting their children 
  • One-Night groups for special occasions - Back To School Night, Coping with the Holidays, Mother’s/Father’s Day, Summer Fun Day, Holiday Happening 
  • offered in Kent, New Castle, and Sussex Counties

CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools):

  • 10 sessions offered in the school setting or community/mental health setting
  • for students ages 10 to 18 who have experienced trauma (examples include witnessing community or interpersonal violence; being in a disaster; being abused; homelessness) and who experience PTSD symptoms
  • research-based curriculum teaches students skills (relaxation, how to challenge upsetting thoughts, social problem solving) and helps them process the traumatic memories and grief 
  • therapy group allows students to support one another in practicing skills and processing thoughts and feelings
  • groups are led by a trained counselor and require students to be screened 
  • offered in Kent and New Castle Counties 

Community Education:

  • Training for professionals and general audiences
  • Lending Library for families and the community 
  • Family Survival Kit, School Survival Kit, Illness Survival Kit, CBITS Survival Kit sent upon request (call 302-235-5544)

Since 1989, Kidds has provided a compassionate pathway to healing for grieving children and their families, and empowered the community to be supportive throughout the grieving process.

We believe that with support and education, children and families facing a death or life-threatening illness can mobilize their own capacities to cope and heal. A knowledgeable and caring community is an essential aid in the process.
