The mission of the State Office of Volunteerism is to connect potential volunteers with government and non profit agences who are looking for talented citizens to help them in a variety of ways.
Central to that effort is the free website www.volunteerdelaware.org.
Over 700 agencies are listed on the site and over 2,000 volunteers are aleady registered and using the site to help them find just the right opportunity.
Registration is free and searching is easy.
In addition to the website, the State Office of Volunteerism houses two stipended volunteer opportunities such as AmeriCorps and the Foster Grandparent Program. It also oversees the Volunteer Delaware 50+ Program - specifically for adults over 50 - in New Castle and Sussex counties. The program also has a presence in Kent County.
For teens, the office runs the Delaware Volunteer Credit Program which allows high school students to earn an elective credit toward graduation.
Volunteering is particularly helpful during times of transition and a great way to maintain skills, learn new ones, reconnect with the community, and create relationships that can translate into friendships and even job references.
